Description
Respondent Maxine Schramm owns and operates a rooming house on Wells street in the city of Milwaukee. Respondent Richard Schramm and appellant Laura Merkley each rented a room on the second floor of the building. The hallway on the second floor is approximately 30 feet long and runs in a north-south direction, as shown by plaintiffs Exhibit No. 24, a drawing of the hallway reproduced with this opinion. Schramms room (No. 22) is located at the south end and appellants (No. 26) is on the west side of the hall. A bathroom, which was shared by all the roomers, was at the north end. The distance between the door to appellants room and the end of the hallway near Schramms was roughly 20 feet. The only light fixture in the hall hung from the ceiling just above the hallway directly outside of appellants door. There were no windows in the hall. The walls and ceiling of the hall were painted a dark color and there was a dark carpet on the floor.
